The thing is – it’s not new at all. I read Fast Food Nation several years ago. The author’s focus in that book is mostly on the social and economic impact of the fast food industry. He does, also write a good bit about serious health hazards arising from the “accepted” practices in the food processing industry and how there are serious health hazards.
The ultimate thing is, that these risks are present primarily because it’s less expensive to do nothing. They are fixable.
